YOU'LL need your shades on both inside and out, but the new Mazda2 has already made its rivals green with envy after being voted the 2008 World Car of the Year.
This snazzy-looking supermini weighs 100kg less than its predecessor, resulting in lower fuel consumption, reduced emissions and improved performance.
It's fun to drive too, with the 1.5 version producing 103bhp at 6,000rpm, with a peak torque of 101lb-ft at 4,000rpm.
Though the Mazda2 might seem compact on the outside, on the inside it seems spacious to its occupants.
There's also plenty of practical storage compartments, including a glove box with an open magazine rack for storing road atlases.
The floor console between the seats has two cupholders and a tray behind them for items as large as a handbag. The door pockets allow storage of a half litre bottle and an A4 atlas.
Mazda's keyless system does away with the need of holding a key in your hand. When you're carrying the key in a jacket or shopping bag, the Mazda2 can be opened by simply pushing a button at the door handle.
Starting the car is also done by simply turning an ignition knob on the steering column.
Mazda weight specialists saved 13kg using weight optimising measures in the suspension, giving both better handling and ride comfort.
Rest assured that other colours are available.
