WITH its sharp looks and rather cute character', the new Punto (called Grande Punto due to its increased size) is attractive not only because of its price, but because of its solid reliability and comfort.
Fiat has always made good small cars and although the Punto is not what you'd call powerful, comfy seats have plenty of adjustment and the suspension soaks up most of the bumps.
The height-adjustable front seat offers good access and visibility.
Excellent ergonomic controls make driving a pleasure, while back-seat passengers will always have plenty of room to get comfortable, even with two six-footers upfront!
Add to this 275 litres of boot space and it's more than just a great runaround.
There are seven models to choose from - Grande Punto Active, Active Aircon, Dynamic or Eleganza. And for the sportier types, an Active Sport, Dynami Sport and Sporting. You can personalise models with a range of options, such as the Sky Dome sunroof or dual-zone automatic climate control system.
The engine range is unusual in that there are more diesels (four) than petrols (two).
The 1.3 16-valve car produces 75bhp and is pretty economical too - an increasing important factor in today's climate as the depressing cost of fuel continues to depress motorists everywhere.
Active safety features include Electronic Stabiliy Control, two dual-stage front airbags, side and window airbags, an energy-absorbing body shell and safety belts with pre-tensioners and load limiters.
Unsurprisingly, the Grande Punto has been awarded with the 5-star Euro NCAP certificate.
