School radio station goes on air

A SCHOOL radio station is broadcasting to the public for the first time this week.

Ice Radio is based in Weatherhead Media Arts College, Wallasey, and until now its shows have only been broadcast around the school.

But from now until Friday July 11, the station’s young presenters will be broadcast to the people of Wallasey on 87.7fm.

The station features year nine, 10 and 11 pupils who have broadacast in school for several years. Topics covered on air include everything from fashion and beauty to revision, bullying and culture.

This week’s broadcast will consist of a blend of music and chat and feature Wallasey-based Manor Primary and Mount Primary schools.

Year 10 boys from nearby Mosslands School have also been invited to add their work to the station.

The school’s director of media, Nicola Swindell said: “Radio is central to our media arts college and Ice radio is hugely popular with our students. It gives them a fantastic opportunity to develop real media skills and provides students with a voice within the school.

“I am delighted that they are now being given the opportunity to broadcast into the community and look forward to hearing the comments of our neighbours.”

Rachel Byrne, who has been involved with the school’s after hours radio club for three years, said: “After so many years of hard work behind the scenes it’s great to see the students’ hard work and dedication being recognised in the wider community. The live broadcasts are the perfect opportunity to promote Weatherhead media arts.”
