£7m to fill potholes as council plans to repair hundreds of roads

Wirral Council has given a four year £1.3m contract to Rhino Asphalt Solutions Ltd, a specialist highways maintenance business, to treat road surfaces across the borough. This will run alongside the local authority’s in-house team as the amount of roads fixed in the borough is set to double.

The contract follows an agreement by councillors in March to spend a total budget of £7.2m over the next financial year to tackle potholes and other issues with the road. A total of 376 roads are expected to be treated using a £6.4m budget boosted by a £1.3m UK government pothole fund. An additional £745,000 will be spent on bridge maintenance.

In March, the local authority said this year’s programme was double the number of roads sorted the previous year and it expects work to start in late April. It has warned drivers and other road users there may be disruption during this period.

Cllr Liz Grey, chair of the environment, climate emergency and transport committee, previously said: “As a local authority, we have a legal duty to maintain roads within the borough and this work requires continual investment.

“The roads earmarked for improvements are prioritised based on condition surveys, as well as reports carried out by highways inspectors, residents and councillors.

“Repairing roads across the borough is essential to keep Wirral moving – whether that be by bike, on foot or in a vehicle – and our annual programme is a major investment to deliver on those expectations and keep our residents safe. We know that often roadworks delay people’s journeys, and we apologise for that, but the end result is better, safer surfaces.”
